Kathakars School of Dance and Nirmiti are proud to feature this unique production featuring one of India’s leading exponents of classical dance Dr Uma Dogra. Dr Uma Dogra will take the audience on a journey of different stages in a woman’s life and her approach to it, ranging from falling in love for the first time to motherhood to ultimately aging. This production features use of poetry woven with Hindustani classical renditions set in the language of Kathak an ancient classical dance form. Uma Dogra is known for her Abhinaya (expressive dance style) and storytelling ability that has mesmerized audiences internationally.
Kathak: Kathak is one of the 8 major forms of Indian classical dances. The origin of Kathak is traditionally attributed to the traveling bards of ancient northern India, known as Kathakars or storytellers. The term Kathak is derived from the Vedic Sanskrit word Katha meaning "story", and kathaka in Sanskrit means "he who tells a story", or "to do with stories."

ABOUT UMA DOGRA
Uma Dogra, a leading Kathak exponent, is arguably one of the most powerful and compelling dancers of India. Honored as Pandita, Uma Dogra is the senior-most ‘Ganda Bandh’ disciple of Late Pt. Durga Lal, the legendary Kathak Maestro from the Jaipur Gharana. Uma Dogra has been enthralling audiences all over India and abroad for more than 45 years now. For her great contribution as a dancer, teacher and choreographer she has been conferred with the ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar’( Award ) for 2014 by the Govt. of India, ‘Maharashtra Gaurav Samman’ 2015 by Govt. Of Maharashtra, ‘Maharashtra Sanskriti State Award (Rajkiye Puraskar)’ in 2009 by Govt. of Maharashtra and an ‘Honorary membership of Min-on Concert Association Tokyo Japan’ for spreading Peace and culture through her Dance in 2008. Endowed with a dynamic personality and a highly imaginative mind, Uma brings to Kathak not only a mastery of technique that is a fruit of meticulous training but a total involvement in dance, a profound confidence and a joyous spontaneity that infuses her performance with rare intensity and authority. Her dance has taken her to Japan, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, USSR, Zambia, Kenya, Mauritius, Spain, France, Holland, Bahrain, Doha, UK, University of Alberta in Canada, Atlanta, University of Florida Gainesville, Stanford University, University of Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Washington, Atlanta, Houston, all in the United States.
