SFDanceworks Season 7

November 7-10
on Z Space’s Steindler Stage

SFDanceworks continues to push the boundaries of contemporary dance by commissioning and presenting cutting-edge works that bridge the past, present, and future of the art form. For its seventh season, SFDanceworks has commissioned three distinctive pieces by choreographers at various stages in their careers: JA Collective, Rena Butler, and Marco Goecke. These works, along with a unique collaboration with the Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco, will be showcased in the round, offering audiences an intimate and immersive experience that brings them closer to the artists and stage.

JA Collective, consisting of the dynamic duo Aidan Carberry and Jordan Johnson, is known for intricate choreography featured in pop music videos. As emerging choreographers, they are making their Bay Area debut with a world premiere trio set to music by J. Tyler Johnson of the band half•alive. The piece will feature Carberry, Johnson, and Lani Yamanaka, marking her third season with SFDanceworks. Our second world premiere by Rena Butler, who is celebrated for her contemporary cool and in-demand choreography, brings a quintet inspired by animal mutability, with music performed by the Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco. Finally, Butler returns to the stage for Marco Goecke’s acclaimed solo, Äffi, a West Coast premiere, becoming the first American woman to do so, offering a rare opportunity for Bay Area audiences to witness Goecke’s distinctive movement vocabulary.
